Copywriting FAQs

Where are you?

I’m based in Brisbane, Australia, but I’ve also lived in Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast… even Auckland, New Zealand! My clients are from all over Australia and sometimes even other countries.

Can we meet in person?

Between Skype, email and the phone, I generally find that face-to-face meetings aren’t necessary unless it’s a really big project. If you really want to meet it can be arranged by request, however I’ll need to charge for the travel time.

How can you write about my business if you don't live here?

The rules of marketing and copywriting apply no matter where you live. And for anything area specific, I’ll be asking you to provide information in the briefing stage anyway, so there’ll be no guesswork involved.

How can you write about my industry if you don't work in it?

This is why I love copywriting so much. I wear a lot of hats (detective, psychologist, strategist… chameleon!) which allow me to understand you, your business and your customer in a way that allows me to write copy that communicates your message clearly and authentically.

If you need something super specific, I may recommend talking to a specialist in your area, but that’s not normally necessary. So far I’ve written copy for lawyers, financial planners, hypnotherapists, business coaches, authors, personal trainers, nutritionists, real estate agents, retail companies and more.

How do I know if I'll like your work?

Before you even hire me, I’ll happily share examples of my work with you which will give you a good idea of my style. If that’s still not enough and it’s a big, high-stakes job, you can commission me to do a paid trial (a small sample of work) as a test.

Once we’re working together, remember that you’ll generally have two rounds of amends as part of our agreement. To this day, I’ve never needed more than 2 rounds to achieve a finished product that my clients were 100% happy with.

I need something done, like, urgently. Can you help?

That all depends on the size of the job and my current availability. If I can fit you in and you require a 48hr turnaround on your job, I will include a 25% rush rate with my quote. Why? Because I’m having to push back my existing jobs to fit you in and will often have to pull some crazy hours to achieve your deadline. The same goes if your job requires me to work through the weekend.

How will you know what to write?

Good question! This is where the briefing phase comes in. I’ll send you a document to fill out that covers a range of questions from details about your business to information on your target market. For most projects, we’ll also have a 60 minute Skype session prior to kick-off where I can quiz you on the information provided and get to know you and your business even better.

Why don't you charge by the hour or the word?

To charge by the hour or the word means you don’t really know what you’re getting yourself into. Also, is it really fair that I charge extra just because I’m having a slow week? Flat rates work best for both of us because there’s full disclosure and we all know what to expect from the beginning.

Does your quote include uploading the copy to my website?

No, my quote includes providing the copy on a user-friendly “copydeck” that can be passed on to your web developer and includes everything they need to properly format the copy so it looks schmick. If you manage your site yourself and need me to upload it, let me know and I can include that in the quote.

I already wrote my copy, can you just pretty it up?

I can definitely offer my services as a copyeditor or proofreader, but I’d first need to see the copy. See, “prettying” it up usually involves more than some basic grammar and spell checks – in fact, it’s sometimes easier to write it from scratch if you’re really wanting to give it some personality.

On the other hand, if you just want your copy optimised (SEO), I could quote on just doing that. But again, it’s best for you to provide me with the copy so I can give you an accurate quote.

What are your payment terms?

If your project totals $750 or above, I’ll require a 50% upfront deposit to secure the job in my calendar. Jobs under $750 require 100% upfront payment. I work on a first come, first served basis, so can’t confirm my availability until payment is received (and my proposal is signed).

Do you have a minimum job size?

No, there’s no job too small! Whether it’s a tagline or a couple of Facebook ads, I’m happy to accommodate. I do however have a minimum job fee of $350 because even small jobs require a certain amount of briefing and consultation. If your job doesn’t add up to this, you might want to consider batching it with something else I can help you with (this can include any other services I provide – not just copywriting).

I'm not sure what I want, can you give me a ballpark figure?

Of course! This won’t be a guarantee of the price, but it should give you enough of an idea that you know whether it’s doable or not. Just get in touch and give me as much detail as you can you can.
